Symbol of Yearning

1. ¡®The store¡¯ I looked back

For the past fifteen years, there has been a ¡®store¡¯ which is a symbolic thing on the center of my work. Stores are the objects of yearning and memories, and the place for having communication with all generations. I¡¯ve drawn many stores, expressing the features of its region and of its structures with sharp pen, and seeking reality consistently. I did not force the formality of isolation and concept, avoiding reality and going against the trend. Now I¡¯m trying to understand its meaning which store gives, and to look in the work with another view. When I looked in again, I realized that the props which are put inside of the store such as an empty plastic chair, wooden bench, a low wooden yellow bench, a bicycle, and a red mailbox are the medium that made them be harmonic. It is totally enough for imagining the scene of people communicating each other under the sunshine. Also, almost stores in my drawings don¡¯t have a fancy signboard. Maybe it is so awkward to be named itself with shiny name, or it does not need to be named because it is old and shabby itself. It feels so lonesome compared to the standardized lights of chain-convenient stores. I can feel the geographical environment and the providence of following the times. I¡¯ve watched the movie shoot in front of the Seok-ii supermarket which is located in the beginning of Ten-wells village(Yeolwoomul maeul). I really wanted to visit there but I¡¯ve read the article which said the store was torn down after shooting the film. Suddenly I remembered Joan-ri supermarket, Jinan supermarket, Gapyeong rotary store, Jingwansanghoe under the Bukhansan and Jangjasanhoe in Songcheon-ri. I remember many stores only in my mind because they are already disappeared or left like a skin of insect which already molted. But still there are dignified stores remained such as Seokchisanghoe near Gunsan commercial high school or Oil refinery store in Gokseong, and there are so kind stores such as Okkiisanghoe in Yeokjeonpyeong-ri or Haesung supermarket in Haenam.

A pendulum of disappearance and remaining is moving crossly inside of my memories. I can think of Edward Hopper¡¯s desperate equilibrium beauty of city and buildings, and I can feel Endrew Wyeth¡¯s light of isolation and sensitive loneliness. I can think several artists who work at the site of drawing directly. No matter how the world is changing by power, wealth and ideology, the thing not forced by the choice of dichotomous changing is might be yearning, I think.

2. From Haenam to Hanyang

The picture ¡®In Haenam¡¯ which I drew last March shows the small store very well as a symbolic thing of this time. This is a scenery which we see soundlessly as if the calmness would be disappeared. The dark blue sky of early evening and trees surrounded behind the store stood stately like a folding screen might face up to the reality. It looks quite mystic but risky. The orange light which is reflected in a streetlamp and glass door of the store seems like a bright look of a saint who keeps warmness alive. There is no signboard. When the darkness came down, next day the sun rises up. But in there, I just stay and look the night view as if the time is stopped. It feels like explaining my works and many parts of my life implicatively. I liked those views, so I drew night views more. This exhibition is more special. Here, 60 Gahaw-dong was a small store named ¡®Hanyang supermarket¡¯ before. I fixed and remodeled here, so it became a galllery now. It is so closed to Bukchon Hanok Village that store¡¯s selling was quite good. I feel deeply moved to hold an exhibition in the place used to be a store. I tried to give meaning of the store, mainly showing the props on this exhibition. On my exhibition, there is no special performance, funny or spontaneous gestures but only the scenery of stores drawn with sharp lines. The scenery of yearning of my mind would be exhibited. I drew every works as if I travel from Ganjeolgot of Ulsan, calm place of Gangjin, end of the earth of Hanam, Yudal-mountains of Mokpo to Hanyang supermarket. I want to stop by the small store which is placed in my heart and to take a rest for a while drinking a cup of water.
