The exhibition- the picnic of memories

<A small corner store> Last October, I opened ¡°the series of small stores¡± stories which I¡¯ve drawn for 10 years, sitting together in the exhibition center which exhibited Bbobkki(kind of a sweet candy) or jawbreakers in a corner. I finished my exhibition, feeling sad for disappearing small stores into our memories, which gave me comfort, and which had joys and sorrows together with neighbors. In spite of many words of encouragement I got from many people, it was a great chance for me to ask myself like ¡°Did I afford the effort or suffering as an artist who completed the result which make people be moved or as a ¡®drawer¡¯ who draw lines with insight which made me be able to communicate with contemporary publics. I took a trip. Getting out from familiar town, with my life and memories, whenever I entered a strange place to find out small stores which stayed there for a long time, I felt flutter. A new convenient store which is located on the place where the old store was there before looks so strange as if wearing awkward clothes, and when I found out the small store which has beautiful atmosphere and interesting stories, I tried to calm down and looked inside with curious eyes. I smelled the passed time.

The old products on the old showcase such as well-riped fruits in a box, colorful snack packs, big or small daily products are different depends on store¡¯s characters. When we look products carefully inside of the store, we can easily notice that there is a human affection when people in town buy and sell the products. The small store is not just a symbol of old, shabby, and old-fashioned things, but is the place where formative structures which have each familiar feeling and my own childhood memories are entwined with each other, and release their energy. The trip from Gangwon-do to the end of Nam-do gave me confidence to what I want to draw. Especially, Seokchi-sanghoe located in the right side backstreet of Gunsan Commercial High School seems like my drawing itself. The name of Seokchi means stone-mountains. It seems like reflect owner¡¯s straight mind. The name and font of green sign, small but well-arranged inside, and a big tree next to the store, the enterance of the store looked like little bit sharp and the stone behind the store all make a harmony together. I couldn¡¯t get out of the store easily when I opened the store¡¯s door which was well-thumbed with many stories. My heart was purified there because it felt like a place for communicating eachother by sharing warm feeling and a place which reflects a life what I want to express on my drawing. It was very cold winter, sunshine I¡¯ve got from my trip is much stronger than any metaphor on my drawings. Whenever I talked about those of stories on the center of a city, I felt like returning to the innocence of childhood. The innocence of childhood is like a memories¡¯ picnic whoever can enjoy easily.

How does it look like a piece of sweet memories as like a time travel getting out of the daily life condenses and reflects? It might seem like warm-feeling which is reflected by glass window of small store in the sunlight of winter. I draw sharply by dipping a pen in warm air. A speed of thin and sharp lines are drawing like blood flowing into capillary, reading someone¡¯s palm with magnifier, or doing needlework one stitch by one stitch. Keep drawing lines continually on the overdrew lines. Flowing time was stopped slowly and sunshine was getting calm. I can feel not only the quietness and silence but movement. I can also feel the traces of hand-stained door, broken bricks, empty chair stood alone, snack back which I can almost reach. My hand holding a pen became paralyzed. When we see the formative structure of building concretely, excellent asymmetry of building based on human¡¯s basic habit starts to appear. The secret key of having rhyme even it is twisted and keeping balance is from our culture ¡°being free and being natural¡±. Nowadays, symbolized images and mechanical operating systems becomes our general cultural trends. But I don¡¯t think my work which needs more time to complete is going against the times. I think the process of sharing past, now and future through the emotional records of memories is a real life we are living in now. There is a ¡®small corner shop¡¯ in this context. I want to be closed to lifes which have old and various stories and put them in my pictures, for example, The warmness which I can meet in daily life.
