1. A small corner shop is getting disappeared being pushed out because of many convenient stores and markets, but it has very important role in a countryside town, and reminds us childhood memories as well. The small corner shop located near a well or opposite side from wooden bench under the zelkova tree was the place for people to communicate each other. And there were many stories as much as the number of products displayed in. I¡¯ve heard neighbors¡¯ talking such as ¡°The lightning scares cigarette smoke!¡± or ¡°I¡¯ve seen a pumping ghost in the mill!¡±. At that time my eyes and heart are focused on candies, but the memory of that time suddenly comes to my mind.

Now almost every small shops are very old and shabby. It seems like ridiculous to see the tiles slightly fell in and the asymmetric added slate roof. A cracked cement wall and a light-brown sliding door are typical scenery of small stores. A stripe awning installed by paying money attracts our gaze. Advertising posters on the door are just attached like faded paints. Plastic chairs which are always empty. It is like an invisible meeting of alienated people. The scenery seems like clam and lonely even though there is some whispering.

However, when we open the narrow door of the store, recollecting the old memories, the store might give the sweetest, over the familiarity to even a stranger. That is a charming point of small stores.

2. In 1997, after moving to Toechon, I started to draw ¡®small stores¡¯ pen sketching. That was the time country tried to cut down the expenditure to overcome IMF. I always walk from Gwaneum-ri to Dosu-ri and draw the tin roof small stores with sharp pen. In my workplace which was like a vinyl house, I drew them rapidly even if my fingers were bent. I took a rest inside of the work whenever I completed a piece of pictures. I just keep thinking the feeling of small stores I saw in the sunny morning. So it became not important for me that the place where the store located, what the store is selling, the time when the store is going to be removed, or whether the store is monumental or not. The small store which I draw only keeps warmness inside of my heart without holding bleak air or damp moisture, even if it is raining or snowing, or darkness is coming.

Sunlight is shining equally to everyone, so I hope my pictures to shine with serenity to everyone.
